Let's go on an outing for plum-blossom viewing!
In Hiroshima,the plum trees have only partially blossomed so far.
You can enjoy plum-blossoms viewing in the Shukkeien Garden.
I could not remember that when was the last time I went there,
so I felt as if I visited there for the first time and it was
fun walking in the garden.
The garden was bigger than I expected and also
There are some benches in the garden,so you can have a long break there!!
Why don't you go on an outing for plum-blossom viewing?!

Nice Nearby Cafe "Bee Cafe"
When you walk around the Hana Hostel's surrounding area, you can find some nice cafes and restaurants which we can recommend and tell you about. I'd like to show you one of them on this blog. This time I'll introduce the Bee Cafe to you.
The Bee Cafe is on the street from Hiroshima station to new MAZDA baseball stadium. You can easily find it with it's hand painted red exterior and red sign board.
They open from 11am to 11pm, are closed on every Sunday until March. When the baseball game season start, they are closed on every Monday. The daily lunch special is just 650yen, with 150yen you can enjoy tasty after-supper coffee as well.
They have some foreign beers, like Guinness, Heineken, and also some yummy appetizers, so you can enjoy drinking at night.
This is the lunch special, fried pork cutlet with Japanese style sauce. It changes every day. It's so tasty!!
The Bee Cafe is just 1 minutes walk from our hostel. Please feel free to ask our staff for directions to the Bee Cafe!!

Hiroshima World Peace Memorial Cathedral
In Hiroshima,there is a cathedral which was erected to commemorate the victims of the atomic bombs and it is a symbol of world peace.
The cathedral started construction on Aug.6,1950 and was completed 4years later(on Aug.6,1954).Also,it was designated as a national important cultural property in 2006.
Yesterday,I went there for the first time......
As this photo,you might see beutiful sights if you visit there on a sunny days(Around 2pm).
It can be seen at this particular time(Only winter).It was so beautiful!!!

A Thousand Paper Cranes from Washington DC
We had a guest who brought 1,000 paper cranes from US!
I was happy as one of the people living in Hiroshima.
Paper cranes on the table,
in the bag,
and more in this suit case!!
She says that her friend helped the first 1oo cranes,
and she finished the rest!
Do you know the story about a thousand paper cranes?
A girl named Sadako, who became a victim from the bomb,
she was diagnosed as a leukemia.
She kept folding a thousand cranes so that she can live longer.
She could only fold 644 before her death, so her friends completed
the 1,000 cranes.
It is said that folding 1,000 paper cranes makes a person's wish come true.

It's snowing in Hiroshima
Hi there! It is snowing in Hiroshima.
It's freezing cold outside, but it's fun!
I found a nice guest with a nice T-shirts in this morning.
In Japan,most of Japanese people can not spend a day with only T-shirts in winter.
I have heard that western people have higher body temprature than Japanese people .
May be 2 degrees.
I wish I could have the same temperature in winter....
He left a message for us.

2009 New Years Eve Toshikoshi Noodles
On 2009 New Years Eve, there was heavy snow across the country in Japan, how was your 2009 New Years Eve?
Even in Hiroshima city there was much snow, like a storm of snow, and at the Sanyo Expressway (mountain side of Hiroshima) over 40 cars piled up because of the icy road. In terms of weather it was a terrible New Years Eve, but in our Hana hostel, thank God, we could enjoy a peaceful New Years Eve.
We followed Japanese New Years Eve tradition by serving Toshikoshi Noodles for every guest for dinner. Our staff members made them, decorated with tenpura of shrimp and Japanese herb leaves. It was a little small, but very tasty.
80% of our guests are from overseas. It looked hard for the guests to make loud slurping noises when they ate the noodles like Japanese people (that's the correct noodle-eating technique) , but everyone could eat the noodles using chopsticks skillfully.
I tried to explain the Toshikoshi Noodles culture to the guests like "Japanese people eat soba noodles while listening to the bells, and wish for health and longevity in the year to come", but they just had wondering looks on their faces. I guess traditional Japanese culture is sometimes a little strange for foreigners!! Anyway homemade tenpura was received well by everyone.
Then at midnight, we could listen to Joya-no-kane, bells which ring the old year out at Joukouji temples just in front of Hana Hostel. In Buddhist beliefs, humans are born with 108 worldly desires which are removed when the bell is struck 108 times. We could remove them, so 2010 will be a nice year for us ;-).

Christmas Party at HANA♪
We had a Christmas party on the 25th.
The party was suppose to start from 7pm but there were already
many people waiting in the living room!
So we rushed and prepared many dishes on the table.
And...
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
Teriyaki chicken, fried chicken, caesar salad, and rice cake pizza!
Our manager made the rice cake pizza and it was so delicious!!
And a gift from our manager...
Domo Arigato---!!!!
My Christmas started from 22nd and I've been eating cakes since
then until the real Christmas!
I hope everyone had a great time in this party!

One of my favorite place in Yamaguchi
There's a place called "SANZOKU" in Yamaguchi prefecture, our neighborhood.
It's a Japanese restaurant, but not a normal restaurant.

Sanzoku-Yaki is a chicken leg with a special sauce. I love this sauce as much as
Okonomiyaki sauce!
Sanzoku-Musubi is a huge Rice ball with 4 kinds of fillings.
Also, they change the decorations of the buildings and around the buildings seasonally.
This time, it was Christmas.
