Ex:Kazunoko (数の子),(Herring roe) Kazu means "number" and ko means "child." It symbolizes a wish to be gifted with numerous children in the New Year.

Soba (buckwheat noodles) eaten on New Year's Eve is called toshikoshi (year-bridging) soba in Japan. It is a tradition to eat soba on New Year's Eve since soba has the meaning of longevity.
